Landside security study

Following the recent terrorist attacks at Brussels and Istanbul airports, DG MOVE commissioned o&i consulting ltd to conduct a study regarding the protection of public areas at airports. The purpose of the study was to understand and assess the most effective ways of performing and improving landside security.

The study recommends the following measures, which it believes are part of a more mature approach to risk management:

• Clarity of accountabilities for landside security
• Formal and informal information sharing structures
• Robust, multi-stakeholder risk assessment processes and risk registers which are regularly reviewed and updated
• Multi-stakeholder contingency plans and incident response plans, which are rehearsed
• A broad range of appropriate mitigation measures, including terminal infrastructure which is designed with security in mind (sometimes supported by state level advisory programmes)

These points are in line with the approach taken in the Best Practices in Transport Security document by CoESS and ASSA-i (publication on 6^th October 2017). ASSA-i will look at the study in more detail and comment if necessary.
